Mark Lewis was born in Oklahoma City. He began his undergraduate studies in art at Oklahoma State University and completed his BFA in Painting at the Kansas City Art Institute (1982). He received his MFA in Painting at Yale University (1984). He has taught as an adjunct and visiting artist at several institutions including American University, Georgetown University, the New York Studio School, Mt Gretna School of Art, Chautauqua, and the University of Virginia. He recently retired from The University of Tulsa where he taught painting, drawing and collage for more than twenty years. Lewis completed a commission piece in 2008 titled, "The Tallgrass Prairie," for the new BOK Arena in Tulsa designed by Cesar Pelli. In 2018, Lewis was in "The Beyond: Georgia O'Keeffe and Contemporary Art" traveling exhibition which originated at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas. His work also can be found locally and nationally in numerous private and public collections. He maintains a daily studio practice and continues to regularly exhibit his new work. Lewis is represented by the Bowery Gallery in New York City.
